Sammy Houghton is a huge fan of twinning in Tikiboos with her mum. Known to many runners as Mumma Bear and Baby Bear, the pair always stood out as the Tikiboo twins by their friends, family, and fellow runners. In October 2019 Sammy’s life changed overnight when an unexpected horse-riding incident left her unable to walk and unable to feel the lower half of her body. Read her story below:

"The 5th of October started out like any normal Saturday, I woke up, threw on my Unicorn Tikiboos and headed straight to the stables to sort out the horses and hop on for a ride. After completing the daily horse-life chores it was time to swap the Tikiboos for jodhpurs (I’ve got to keep those Tikis clean!).

The ride was going really well, so I decided to squeeze a few jumps into the time I had. But as the horse went to jump the final fence, I lost my balance and fell off. Following the fall, I was left unable to walk, and I cannot feel the lower half of my body, I can no longer run or do anything exciting (unless laying in bed watching Netflix and eating food in my tikis counts!)

Most days, all I want to do is cry, but since the accident, I’ve used my Tikiboos as something to smile about during my physio sessions. I find that the colours and patterns help to brighten up the drab, magnolia and often depressing NHS wards, and they often help others to smile too.

It might sound strange, and there are probably not many people who use their Tikiboos as a tactile distraction but when I’m finding physio all too much, I sit down and touch my Tikiboos - maybe they’ll give me a bit Tikiboo-Power, or maybe the soft texture helps me to calm down, either way, there’s something about them that keeps me focused on recovering.

Even the physios love my Tikiboos and they always wonder what ones I’ll have on next. Hands down the Unicorn ones are my favourite as I am completely unicorn obsessed and I believe that the Unicorn power helps me get up out of bed when I really don’t want too, smile when all I want to do is cry and keep on trying when all I want to do is give up.

Thank you Tikiboo!"

Hi Sammy, I have had horses all my life until lOsing my last old boy two years ago. I know only too well from having had falls myself just how quickly things can change. My friend broke her back in an accident similar to yours. You are just so strong…of course Unicorns are real, who would dare to disagree with that! If that was your cob in the photos he/she is beautiful!
I am certain that Tikki power will help you in your daily battles. You are beautiful, you are strong…you ARE TIKKI!! XXXXX
